Our 5 Favorite Vegan, Cruelty Free, and Organic Beauty Brands

Happy Earth Day! To celebrate, we’re sharing our favorite vegan, cruelty-free, and organic beauty brands — with top product pics from each. What’s your favorite earth-friendly cosmetic or makeup brand?

1. Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC)

OCC said they wanted to “raise the bar” by not only eliminating all animal testing in their company, but choosing to never use animal-derived ingredients like Lanolin or Beeswax. Their commitment to delivering true vegan products make this one of our favorite animal-friendly brands! Our product pick? Their cult favorite, the OCC Lip Tar.

2. Zoya Nail Polish

Looking for a long-lasting manicure without all the icky chemicals? Pick Zoya—which features pretty polishes “free of toluene, formaldehyde, DBP (phthalates) and camphor.” Wondering where to start? How about this Blogger Collection of pretty corals & pinks featured on Birchbox?

3. NYX Cosmetics

Buying cruelty-free (and Earth-friendly) doesn’t mean breaking the bank. That’s why NYX is one of our favorite drugstore brands—they never test on animals and eliminate nasty chemicals like Parabens and Formaldehyde from their products. In addition, almost their entire line (with pencils as an exception) is vegan-friendly. Our fave? The NYX Curve Liner - perfect for making a kitty-friendly cat eye!

4. Tarte Cosmetics

We love Tarte for two reasons this Earth Day: First, their commitment to amazing natural products and their special line of Vegan cosmetics makes them one of the most green lines around. Secondly, they’re adopting a tree every Earth Day in honor of their “tartlettes”! Wanting to know where to start with this natural line? Try their highly rated Amazonian Clay Foundation

5. Jack Black

Last but not least, something for the boys. Jack Black has created a great line of all-vegan, cruelty-free, natural shave products. While the brand is a top favorite among guys on our site, girls are loving their nature-friendly products, too! Our #1 pick? The Jack Black Beard Lube.

My Trainca.se - Mel of Social Ice Cream

Love everything girlie and social, like us? Then you’ll love the sites featured on by our friend Melissa Pont on her blog, Social Ice Cream, which features everything social media, with a bent towards the fun, cute, and pretty! Today, she shares her thoughts on beauty and her 5 must-have products.

image

Ok, so first. Tell us a little bit about yourself!

Well, my name’s Melissa Pont. I am a proud Austinite, social marketing enthusiast/manager, and have been in a long-term relationship with makeup for over 12 years. I also have a blog dedicated to social media called Social Ice Cream where I write about new sites & trends (including Trainca.se!)

Throughout my teen years, I was always the one doing my friends’ makeup, and experimenting with beauty products like my bathroom was a science lab. My dream job growing up was to be a makeup artist to the stars; but alas, that dream has yet to come true. As I’ve grown, I still love experimenting with new products, but I have some that will probably never change.

How would you describe your every day look? What do you change when it’s time to go out?

I would say during the day, I go pretty natural. I can’t live without my concealer and my eyebrows filled in. I also usually wear blush, and mascara. Going out is a different story! I go all out—from contouring, to full-on smokey eye looks. I keep most colors in tune with my hazel eyes, so I’m big on purples, greens, taupes and browns.

Awesome. So it sounds like you’re willing to experiment a bit. Have you ever had a beauty look go awry?

Oh absolutely. I love watching makeup tutorials and then testing them on myself. I tried out one that was based on Kat Von D (of LA Ink)…and…let’s just say it looked a lot better on her than it did on me. There was a lot of black and dark glittery green…but it just did not blend very well. She must have a professional makeup artist, because that look is hard to achieve!

We’re obsessed with those tutorials too. Always looking for that perfect Megan Fox eye. Other than youtube, where do you look for beauty inspiration?

Pinterest is huge for me. I found a Selena Gomez haircut I liked on Pinterest, took it in to the salon this past weekend, and got a pretty dramatic cut. But it turned out great! Of course, I also draw inspiration from my best friends. Nothing like sharing beauty tips with my besties!

Finally, what are your beauty must-haves?

Benefit Erase Paste

This is literally a MUST-HAVE. I MUST HAVE it on my face every single day of the year. I suffer from a common syndrome called super dark under-eye circles. I will not leave the house without putting on my Benefit Erase Paste. It is by far the best concealer I have ever tried/used. It covers everything completely, and matches my skin exactly. Oh, and one will last you at least six months to a year. The only downside is that it may melt or sweat off, so I would suggest patting it with some powdered foundation or translucent powder to set.

Covergirl Eye Enhancers in Brown Smolder

Another must-have that I won’t leave the house without. I actually don’t use this on my eyes, but my eyebrows. Do you like the look of perfectly filled-in eyebrows but don’t want to fork over $30 for Benefit Brow-Zing? Grab yourself a $3 Covergirl brown eyeshadow. All you need is this and an eyeliner brush and you’re good to go! Filled-in eyebrows is definitely my beauty secret to looking put together.

Origins Checks and Balances Frothy Face Wash

One thing I won’t skimp on is my face wash. I have been using this for many years, and it is perfect for my skin, which is sometimes oily, and sometimes dry in spots. It works on most normal to combination skin types. It’s a white creamy wash that lathers up like crazy when you add water to it; so you only need a little pearl-size drop! It makes your face feel squeaky clean, and smells lovely. The only issue is it can make your face SO clean, that you’ll most likely need to follow up with moisturizer to keep your skin soft.

M-A-C Eyeshadow in…every color ever

Okay, so this isn’t technically a must-have, but it is my go-to if I want color on my eyes. Eyeshadow is something I always love to experiment with, but after all my experimenting, I have found M-A-C to be the highest quality by far. Best pigment. Best texture. Best color options.

Essie Nail Polish

Manicures are never complete without Essie nail polish. In fact, I just gave myself a manicure yesterday with Tart Deco: a summer-y, pale coral. I just think this nail polish is superior to all others. It looks profesh, and the colors just POP. Highly recommend this to anyone looking for a great polish.

How much do YOU spend on makeup?

image

MintLife just posted this amazing makeup infographic on how much (women, mostly) spend on cosmetics.

The number seem spot on (has anyone gotten out of Sephora for less than $40?) and they have good tips on splurge vs. save. However, we still think the best way to save on makeup is to only buy the best products, with beauty recommendations from your friends—and that’s what Trainca.se is all about!

What about you? How do you save on makeup & beauty?
